Well, today my "mommy instinct" kicked in and I made Shelby a doctor appt because she has a pretty bad cough and had a low grade fever the last 2 days (not today though). She's been eating/playing fine and I probably wouldn't have taken her in if Christmas and our Florida trip was not so close.....that being said, I made the appt for a quick check.
I picked her up from daycare and it was snacktime...she was eating and in a great mood. I got her all strapped in the car and away we went. Well, she is still coughing pretty regularly so I kept peeking in the mirror checking on her....about 1 mile from the doctor office, I looked up and she spit up a little, kind of yucky, but no big deal. Well, 10 sec later, she started PROJECTILE VOMITING everywhere (while I'm driving). She did it 3x and we are not talking spit up, real puke....I was freaking out, it was all over her and she was screaming. I pulled into the doctors office quickly and hopped out.
I had no idea what to do...where to start. I always cover her with a blanket and a lot of it was on that so I just grabbed that and threw it outside. I then unstrapped her (mind you, she is covered) and still screaming. I took her jacket off and tried getting some of it off her pants with wipes. I'm looking around and don't have anything in my car to handle this kind of mess.
So, I run in the doctor with her still pretty covered (no coat in 35 degree weather). They let me go to the room right away to undress her.
I get her undressed and wiped up and then weighed and temp. (no fever). So, I ran back in the room and normally have to wait like 5-10 min for doc so I grabbed my cell phone and called Grandma Linda. I told her what happened and she said she'd be right there with towels, etc. THANK GOD!
Doc came in and said that it was probably phlegm and snot that triggered it and she looks fine now. He checked her lungs and breathing and she DOES have the start of an ear infection.
Since we are traveling in 5 days, he did give me antibiotics.
I packed Shelby up (I had an extra outfit in diaper bag) and then waited in the lobby for Linda. She came in and I handed her Shelby while I went to clean up a little. I was able to get a good amount of the puke cleaned up.
I then put towels down and we went home. It took me about an hour to clean up the car seat. I had to take off the cover and get in every nook and cranny. THere was just a TON of puke.
I was VERY lucky that Linda was able to meet me and help me out. I kept thinking to myself what would happen if I was alone. I wouldn't have known what to do. Where would I have put Shelby while I cleaned everything up, not to mention, I didn't have anything to clean the mess.
So my lesson for me at least is that I'm going to make an emergency kit for the trunk for times like this as I'm sure it will not be the last time!
Good news...Shelby is feeling better!
